How does one go about writing a thesis statement for a novel study of Paper Towns?

I've never had to write an essay before, so I didn't even know what a thesis statement was. In what little I now know about it, it doesn't seem right to even need it in a novel study. My assignment asks for it though, so I was wondering what to do.
I know what a thesis statement is, so you don't need to describe that to me. But the problem is I don't have a point to argue. All a novel study is (or at least every one I've done) is a retelling of the story. There's nothing to argue about.
