How does my Jeep Wrangler shifter boot fit back into the shifter hole?

The shifter boot popped out of the shifter hole in my 1999 Jeep Wrangler (TJ).

I'm not sure which way it goes back in. One end appears to be thicker than the other. Does the thick end face forward or back?
