What exactly do you do to shift?
Is there a clutch?
How exactly does it all work?

I know it vaires, so just give me some examples, like a Kawasaki Ninja. Also, are the fast ones different? Like the Suzuki gsx1000r?

But mainly I want to know about the Ninja.
I mean... how do you actually shift gears? I'm not asking what the bike does when you do whatever you do.

The shifter controls a shift fork that moves one way or the other depending on what gear you are shifting to. to shift, you move the shift lever either up or down, 1st is usually down and 2 through 6 is up, neutral is inbetween 1st and 2nd. The clutch has several plates in it. Usually about 6 friction and 6 steel. The clutch plates sit in a basket and when it grabs it turns the flywheel and you move, when you grab the clutch lever it releases the tension on the plates so you stop the transfer of engine power.

On the left hanlde bar there is a clutch lever, pull it in towards the bike, put the bike in first gear, which is one down, ease on the throttle and let the clutch out slowly and pull out, then once you get your RPM's up pull clutch in and go up one gear at a time.
