How does Microsoft Security Essentials affect Google Chrome and https?

I'm using Vista 64 bit and Google Chrome.

I got an alert from Microsoft Security Essentials about a 'back door' with a quarantine recommendation. I applied that action (quarantine) and went back to my browser. The next page I went to gave me a page unavailable error 102. Every other tab I had open did the same thing when I refreshed them.

I restarted my computer, and the same thing happened again. I restarted again, removing the problem instead of quarantine, but the same thing happened again.

I tried opening a few more tabs and noticed that GMail loaded fine. The only reason, from what I can tell is that it uses https. Every page will load correctly as long as I add https to the URL now.

What's the correlation here and how can I change back the settings that I assume have been altered?
