How does inhaling/exhaling during Exercise Reps help?

I read while doing ab workouts you are supposed to exhale at the crunch parts. So I assume thats the way with all other workouts.

So my question is simply does it really help? and how does it help. Will I notice a difference? I normally hold breath while working out on reps still I need to breath again.
