...I thought your position? had to be pinpointed by Satellite . Im old so please explain it in terms a child can understand .

Most people will tell you that it is the satellite that transmits the position to the GPS or receiver....etc etc, but no, no..

The GPS has a very small worm connects to a small compass and then the worm moves depending on the temperature, if its hungry, etc and then the instrument tells your position...

Hope now is clear. Tell your brother in law and you both get smarter!

GPS works by you inputting your destination into the gps unit. The gps unit then sends up a signal from the unit to a satellite in the sky to know where you are located and calculates from your location and the destination your different routes that you may take to get to the where you want to go.

The maps are either programmed into the system or ran for a CD or DVD. Your position on the map is figured by the GPS satellite signal it receives.

Depending on the model of GPS receiver, the maps can be updated by replacing the CD / DVD or connicting the unit to a computer via an Internet download
