How does financial aid work?

I have been going to school and paying cash. Its expensive and i tried applying for financial aid before and was denied. I turned 24 and have heard its easier once you turn 24yrs old. Is that true and can I get financial aid now even though i have already paid for spring semester? Or can I get it for the summer semester even though it isn't here yet? Need info on financial aid cant pay out of pocket any more but still want to go to school. Thanks
