How does Financial Aid work?

My EFC was 0.
I was awarded Cal Grant B-$1,551
I will be attending UCSanta Barbara in the fall and I am wondering if i will have to pay for anything out of pocket or will financial aid cover tuition, books, room and board, meal plan etc.
If i have to come up with my own money I will probably drop out and attend a community college. I haven't received my unofficial award letter yet and i recently got a letter in the mail from the financial aid office which said that my family's income was really low and want me to explain where it all goes to (i.e rent, food, other). After I do this they will give me the letter but what does financial aid cover? Will i go for free?
 
It depends on what financial aid you have applied and qualified for. It can vary greatly. The cost of tuition and housing at your school is also a factor. You need to speak with your financial aid adviser at your school and make a decision before classes start.
