How does Cash For Clunkers help GM & Chrysler if most people bought foreign cars?

I bought a 2009 Toyota Venza AWD wagon with my free money from One Term Barry. $4,600 to be exact. Thursday night when I signed the deal, the Toyota dealer was packed, and when I picked up the new Toyota last Friday it was a zoo. The Toyota/Scion dealer only had 51 unsold new cars left.

" six of the top 10 vehicles purchased are Honda, Toyota and Hyundai. "

Obama administration withholds data on program

Why did transportation secretary LaHood say Cash For Clunkers is "the lifeline that will bring back the automobile industry in America."

Most people bought Toyota, Honda and Hyundai cars not Chevy or Dodge.
I cited the AP news article from today that according to data released by the government, it is true. QUOTE: " the limited information released so far shows most buyers are not picking Ford, Chrysler or General Motors vehicles, and six of the top 10 vehicles purchased are Honda, Toyota and Hyundai. "
OK So why don't we rename it to the "Bigger Commissions For Toyota Salesman Act" and cut the pretense this is aiding bankrupt General Motors and Chrysler.
My Toyota Venza was built in Kentucky but that does not help GM or Chrysler any.
Notice people, I post SOURCES. An Associated Press article from one hour ago. And I quote the article verbatim.

Many Toyotas are assembled in the US by American workers.

Aside from that, inefficient and polluting vehicles are being removed from US highways.

Sales tax revenue is being generated for local economies. American sales workers are earning commissions.

People bought all kinds of cars. Most of those "foreign cars" are made in the US. The program wasn't about just helping GM...it was about helping the auto industry: Dealers, manufacturers, employees, etc

1. "That's not true"
No sources to back the claim

2. "Yet another lie"
No sources to back the claim

3. "It doesn't matter. It stimulated the economy because Americans that work there got the commission."
With the 1 billion dollars it took to initiate the program (2 billion on the back burner), we could have given them the money and reached far more recipients than the 22,500 who sold cars.

4. "Built by Americans in America"
Yes, but GM and Chrysler were the targets for the program -- we as Americans are still into them for billions of dollars. The idea was to chip away at that debt by invigorating demand for those brands. Instead, common-sense took over and people purchased the best products on the market.

Why should we believe the 6/10 stat? Because Obama won't release the information.
Why? Because it won't look good when it's revealed that 6/10 cars sold are foreign models.
Why? Because U.S. cars can't compete -- hence the bankruptcy of G.M. and Chrysler.
Why? Because they haven't turned a profit in 30 years.

It's like the blind leading the blind -- they can't be wrong as long as they're following someone (unless of course that someone they're following doesn't have a clue).

Thanks for the article.

I'm more concerned about the people who bought new cars by trading in their $1500 clunker. If they were driving that car (registered/working), it seems obvious that they couldn't afford the $20,000+ new car. We'll see in 45-90 days how many more defaults we have to deal with -- another small bubble economy? Time will tell.

There's no such thing as a "foreign car". Pretty much all those cars are manufactured in the US. Besides, it was to help JUST GM and Chrysler, but the entire auto industry and the economy as a whole.

Many Toyotas and other foreign brands are made in the US.

GM and Chrysler need to develop better models to compete, but, as it stands, their sales improved via the CARS program in spite of their poor product line

LOL- I bought a 2009 Toyota Camry- I also looked at Ford. There was no way I was going to buy either GM or Chrysler after the way they ran their company into the ground. I actually didn't use the cash for clunkers program because my trade in didn't qualify- & I bought the Camry with 38k miles on it.

It is also funny to see how hard the administration is fighting to get this passed ... especially when you know that they own the majority assets of GM. They are looking after THEIR own interest not that of the people.

okay, so 4 are made in the USA and the other 6 may also be made in the USA, right (think of that 80's movie with Michael Keaton, Gung-ho).

Even if those 6 aren't, they are sold by Americans working for American dealerships aren't they?

I expect the GOP to roll over quickly on this one since most auto dealers are republican contributors.
