How does buying a phone at hhgreg for verizon work?

I am eligible for and upgrade that will give me 100$ off of any phone at verizon. Does this apply if I buy it at hhgreg? I want to buy the droid x. I want to buy it at hhgreg because they have it in stock and the Verizon store does not. How exactly does this work? Do I buy the phone through hhgreg and then go on verizons service or what?
