How does buying a gun online work?

You order the firearm online and pay using whatever method the website requires and it is shipped to an FFL dealer in your state. You then have to go through the hoops that you would normally have to to buy a firearm in CA.
The exception to this is if you have a curio and relics (C&R) license. Then it can be shipped to your house. However, this only applies to C&R guns.
 
You first go to an FFL dealer, or call one, and found out if they will (and what they charge to) accept delivery of the gun and do the paperwork to transfer it to you.
Then you order the gun online and have it delivered to that FFL dealer, go have your background check done there, pay the handling fee to the FFL, and get the gun.
