Unless one happens to be raised with traveling parents we can be very limited on our perspective on the world. We fail to have adequate appreciation of the variety of peoples and cultures that exist. Therefore our viewpoint on the arts, and anything else is limited to what we experience in the climate that surrounds us. Exposure to the worlds varied arts cultivates in us a wider viewpoint and thinking capacity and makes it possible for us to have "a 360' versus a 90' perspective on our lives.
When my son was younger he enjoyed the usual music for teens; soul, hip hop, and rap. When he went to college he came home and started raving about jazz music he had heard while on campus. That bit of exposure changed his perspective and broadened him.
