How does a pre-med college student change for the career of a pilot?

I am currently studying as a student at ucsd. I am seriously considering changing my career towards that of a pilot/jet fighter. Just wondering if anyone knows what's the best way to see if piloting is right for me, assuming I meet all of the requirements necessary to become a pilot. Also, is there any difference or benefits from getting experience as a pilot flying in the airforce or just flying from some random pilot school. Thanks
