legal system? .. is there a relation to religious beliefs and when you would 'let them off the hook' for Gods' sake as an act of forgiveness and mercy even if it meant you knew they were in the wrong and could collect a fat check? Or is that more of a quality of character in the person with nothing to do with answering to God at all?

For people with true religious convictions, there is never a time when they can just ignore their religion to make a decision. It all comes down to your conscious. If you feel it is right to forgive, and let be, that is fine. At the same time, justice is a very righteous system. I pray for justice all the time. So I think in being true to your religious morals, it can go either way.
