how do you wash a convertable car?

i got one a couple of weeks ago, and im not sure how to take care of it. i know i cant simply just wash it... well, maybe i can just wash it, but if i use soap, i have to wash it real good to get it all off, then add something on top right? to keep it protected? does anyone know the best, cheapest product? and can i take it through a car wash? the kind where YOU wash it? not the automatic ones? and can you tell me other info i might need to know?
