How do you unlock the drawers on an antique roll-top desk?

So, my bf's grandmother had some furniture she was getting rid of, and one of those items just happened to be a roll-top desk- something I have dreamed of for years, but couldn't afford as a student. Now that I have it *in* my home, put together, the side drawers seem to be locked somehow. There are only two locks, that I can see, on this desk. One for the center, below, where your legs go;there is a cabinet there with two doors. The second lock is for the actual roll-top to come down and lock onto the writing surface.

While I was putting the desk together, I noticed that behind all the drawers, there was a rod with pegs in it. The bottom of each drawer has a piece of metal that locks into it, making it stationary. I pushed on the rod, and it unlocked all the drawers.I kind of assumed that the desk would be pushing down on that somehow when it was all put together, but the pegs are still locking the drawers. Is there a trick to this? Two of the drawers on the left *are* coming out, but the rest are locked aside from the two above the writing surface.

I don't know if this helps, but the desk is made by "Indianapolis Cabinet Co. Indianapolis, Indiana, USA". The only other writing on the desk is where the lock pin goes down on the writing surface. That reads "EAGLE LOCK CO".
