How do you turn a black and white image to color in gimp?

I have a picture that was taken naturally in black in white. Is there any way I can change the picture into color with gimp?

You can use the brush tool, and there's a thing you can select that lets you change the color (It will say "Hue") of whatever part of the picture you paint. It's basically like coloring in a coloring book. That's the only way I know of.
