How do you think pop culture affects people going vegetarian/vegan?

Lately there has been a lot of fads that might attract people to a veg lifestyle. There was that diet book Skinny Bitch and they have come out with two others. And then the female character in the Twilight movie was a vegetarian. Do you think people might become vegetrarian/vegan due to these reasons only becaue they think it's cool? Do you think they will stay veg? And does this bother you if you became a veg for reasons like ecological, social justice, or animal suffering concerns?

Yes vegetarianism/veganism is pretty cool in my opinion. You're saving someones life, that's called a hero. And heroes are pretty cool :)

It doesn't matter to me. If someone becomes vegetarian because it's cool, or makes the the decision for ethical/health/political reasons after careful research- the benefits to the environment are the same.

no no no... They will stop eating meat as much as they do, say they're vegetarian, but still eat chicken because they are a hypocrite. They don't care about the animals.

But yes, seeing this in pop culture will make it look cool to PRETEND to be vegetarian

I think a lot of people are more influenced by such things than they would like to admit, but those people don't stick to it because they didn't really support the cause for the right reasons. But I think it's ok for different lifestyles and ideas to be presented in the mainstream media, because it can be a gateway for some people to do some more research on their own once the idea is out there.

I don't really care much about what others do, but I do think than any choice should be made after doing research.

Usually people who become veg because of a fad, are more likely not to remain veg for that long. They do it because their favorite celebrity or band promotes vegetarianism. But once they are over the phase of obsessing about that person/group, they will lose their will to stay veg.
It is a problem in my opinion. Because people who were veg for a short period of time, are likely to express to other people what they didn't like about being veg, and how hard it was. People who may have become veg will be turned off after hearing how hard it is.
I believe people who do it for the right reasons (environmental, social, health, or for animal rights) are likely to remain veg. They dont see it as a chore that isn't worth it. They see themselves as making a difference, and want to keep that lifestyle up.
So yes, it does bother me when people go veg because of a fad. Even though the environment and animals benefit from their fad for a short time. I think we lose more in the long run.

i didn't know bella was a vegetarian in the movie, she sure wasn't in the books.

yes i think many people even now become vegetarians because they think it is cool. do i think most of them will stay vegetarian, probably not, personally the cool factor of vegetarianism isn't big enough for people to stay committed. i don't think many people go vegan because they think it is cool, because most people aren't willing to give up half their normal diets for that, it is mainly vegetarianism that people try. the only problem i have with people being vegetarian to be cool, is they often aren't true vegetarians, like they still eat chicken or fish. also they might not follow a very healthy diet thus getting the stereotypes to us that we're all pale, weak, and sick. and these just gives the wrong image about vegetarianism, then in turn people think veganism is even crazier.

but overall, no matter what the reason people going vegetarian is a good thing. they are helping the environment and animals, even if those are not their intentions.
