How do you test the entire cooling sytem for potential problems?

I have been having issues with over heating but its intermitent... i wanna test the whole system and see for problems then to continue swaping out parts

replaced thermostat already
and fan does turn on( i have it connected to a switch)
i have replaced the radiator cap. the engine runs fine in my garage at idle but lets say i take a hill it will overheat. especially if its hot outside.
