How do you take a self portrait photograph?

I want to take a picture of myself, but of my back, and not myself actually facing the camera.

When I've tried to focus the camera, it won't focus obviously because there is just a blank background, and hasn't got an object to focus on.
Is there any way to get around that?

I have a Nikon D40 by the way.
* And also, I set it on timer, before I focus.
