How do you start writing a story?

Authors lay out an outline. Like characters and plot and stuff.. But how do you go about doing that?..If you know what i mean please give me some ideas.
Please no stupid answers. I am being serious here, i would appreciate it if you would help me out.
 
well my english teacher told us its always easier to right the climax(the main conflict) first. that way u dont just right aimlessly and you know what ur writing up to.
