Bikes can be easily damaged, especially if not packed well. The best way to be assured it's packed properly is to pay to have a local bike shop pack it.
UPS has horrendously poor standards for large package handling. The box will be thrown. It will be stacked under heavier items. If it's not packed perfectly, not only does it run a high risk of being damaged when traveling across the country, but UPS will decline the insurance claim due to improper packaging. I'd check out at least one other courier,
