How do you sew a pattern on jean pockets?

I'm going to attempt to distress my jeans and want to sew a pattern on the back pockets... I have a basic sewing machine. Is there a trick to do this; seems like it'd be hard with the teeny opening.
 
You'd have to remove the pockets, sew on the pattern you want, and reattach them. Be sure your machine can sew through several layers of denim if you decide to do this. Or, you can get iron on designs at a good fabric store. Good luck!! : P
