Cada año ibamos a acampar. (this is the imperfect)
Fuimos is the preterit and I think it makes more sense to use the preterit in this instance.

"Fuimos" isn't in Imperfect Tense, it's Preterite.

In Imperfect, the sentence would go like this:
"Cada año ibamos a acampar".

cada ano ibamos a acampar

fuimos is the preterite, so that is not correct because you want the imperfect, ibamos, because it is a habitual (every year) action :)
