I need to replace the spark plugs and I cannot access them unless I remove the tank first. How do I do that? Also, do they sell plugs for my bike that do not need to be replaced (or cleaned and regaped) every 3000 miles (the owner's manual says that)?

turn the gas line off or clamp it with locking pliers ( best to do it when empty ) pull the seat, un do the bolt that hold the tank on, remove the tank towards the back of the bike wiggling back and from up and down and it pulls right off :)

Remove the seat -
Remove the bolt at the rear of the seat - place your fingers under the metal tab to prevent scratching the fender - hit the hump of the seat towards the rear of the bike.

Remove the gas tank -
Have a pair of pliers ready.
The 3 bolts on the speedometer cluster, remove the bolt at 6 o'clock - lift up the rear of the speedometer and push it forward - remove the speedometer cable (unscrew the cable with the pliers) - unplug the wire connector.
Turn the petcock to off and remove the fuel line.
Remove the bolt at the rear of the gas tank - slightly lift the back of the tank and pull the tank backwards.

All new spark plugs come pre-gapped.
If the engine is well maintained, the spark plugs can last forever.
They're cheap enough....change them every other oil change.
