How do you remove the fuel tank on a 1978 Honda Goldwing GL 1000?

The motorcycle has been sitting for 5 years and I stupidly left gas in it. I want to take the tank off and flush it. I considered using the drain on the tank, but i don't want varnished gas spilled on my motorcycle because the drain is positioned awkwardly.
I checked on just pulling it out and the tank on a 78 bulges out on the right side and its near impossible to just pull back on.

Well there should be a bolt under the seat, it may run cross way across the frame or it may be centered on the tank and run straight down, simply unbolt it, remove the fuel lines from the petcock and pull back and upwards to dislodge the tank from the rubber pieces under the front of it. Now if your bike has a fuel guage installed in the tank, carefully lift the tank and unhook the wire(s) going to the fuel guage and remove the tank. Installationis the reverse.

You do realize you will have to clean the carbs too right?

And to clean them you need to remove the tank, you might consider ordering the appropriate K&L rebuild kits and new enrichner diaphrams (the small rubber diaphrams that go in the sides of the carbs under those metal covers with the 2 screws).

take off the seat, you will see a bolt at the base of the tank unscrew it. disconect the hoses from the tank, clamp them shut, unplug the fuel Pump cord. run the tank low BEFOR or drink the gas when you take it off. pour on self or in CONTAINER.

IF ALL ELSE FAILS USE A SLUDGE HAMMER OR PUT STUFF IN THE TANK TO PREVENT THIS STUPID
