How do you remove a contact from Favorites?

Contacts are automatically added to the Favorites when you call them frequently, but I now have a number of contacts that I no longer use. As far as I can tell, there is no way to remove them. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm using a G1.

The star is deselected on these contacts, yet they remain in my Favorites.

Using the 'long-press' on the contact, it brings up the menu options where I have the option to ADD to Favorites. There is no menu option to REMOVE from Favorites.

Yes. In fact, that's what I've been doing for 4,000+ posts. Obviously, you're getting so many stellar suggestions, I'm just cluttering your thread with nonsense. I'll be on my way. Good luck with that.

I have a G1, and this "feature" annoys me too.

TheOneGnat's suggestion to unstar it is the correct way to remove a contact from your Favorite list, but your problem is that you haven't asked the correct question.

DT's suggestion of long pressing the contact, is also a correct way to remove a favorite, but again, that's not the problem you're having and that is exactly why you're not seeing the "Remove from favorites" option when you long press them.

DT's suggestion of looking for the menu off the Favorites tab was a good one - in fact this very menu is present in some versions of Android.

DT then figured out that you're not talking about your Favorite contacts at all, but actually your Frequently Called contacts. Clearing the Call Log is the normal way to clear this list.

However, the Call Log database losing sync with the Frequently Called list is a known bug in Android and sometimes clearing the Call Log doesn't initiate a clear of the Frequently Called list.

There are only two ways I know of to fix this issue... one is a factory reset, which I wouldn't recommend.

Good luck with figuring out what the other way is.

Were all those wild ass guesses too or did you actually have some knowledge of what you were talking about? Sorry about being harsh, but you really aren't helping anybody here.

Congrats on your record number of posts though. I'll be sure to remember that when I have to scroll endlessly through this forum to find a viable solution.

Of course, had you bothered to read my reply, you'd have realised that each and every one of his comments were correct solutions to the the problem under other circumstances. You can't blame him for not understanding your specific circumstances because you incorrectly described the problem to us.

So I disagree that he's not helping anyone, as most people coming here and reading this thread will get the correct answer that DT provided.

The easiest solution is to go to Home -> Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Application settings -> Contacts Storage -> Clear data. This will wipe all data associated with the Contacts app. The phone will then resync all your contacts, but you'll have lost any Call Logs and Frequently Called numbers from your Favorites tab.

In future, you're more likely to get a quicker and politer response if you don't insult the very people who are taking time out of their lives to help you for free. None of the advice above was bad advice - it fixes this issue most of the time.

There are different versions of the OS floating around for a number of reasons...

Phones were released (the G1, for example) with insufficient ROM sizes to accommodate Android 2.0. It was a miracle that the G1 got 1.6.

Android was also heavily customised by some people - for example the Sense UI on the Hero. These customisations have to be upgraded whenever Android gets upgraded, and that takes a lot of time, effort, and money. Combined with the fact networks get a shed load of support calls whenever they roll out an update, it's a lot cheaper and a lot less hassle for them to just not bother.

Later versions of Android require a bit more from the hardware to run smoothly (CPU, Memory, etc).

If using a G1, go Home -> Menu -> Settings ->Applications -> Manage Applications -> Select Contacts and myFavs storage -> Select Clear Data.

Unfortunately, this wipes out ALL of your favorites. This is not what I wanted to do, but I guess they will repopulate in time.

Thanks again for your help. Sorry if I came off as impolite, but I made my inquiry as clear as I could. Sounds like DT has no familiarity with the G1 platform... I'm glad you came along to assist.

I've tested this myself. It doesn't wipe out any of your Favorites at all. A "Favorite" is simply any contact that is Starred. That information is downloaded from Google when the phone re-syncs.

It does, however, wipe the Frequently Called list BELOW the Favorites (the contacts that are Starred).

If there's any Contacts you specifically want to keep in your Favorites list then just Star them.

I've had the same problem - I've just got an HTC Legend.
It seems that when you add a contact to Favourites, android adds that contact to the Favourites group.

To remove the Contact from Favourites, just edit the contact and remove it from the favourites group.

It worked for me - I don't know if the same process works on other android phones.

Hope this helps, as it was bugging me for a while.

Easy,
Pete.

There is an android enhancement work item filed for this:

please comment on and star this issue to increase it's priority.
