I am thinking about getting an inexpensive portable fish finder for my single man pontoon boat but I am not positive on how to read one. I know they show somewhat the outline of the bottom structure and fish at certain depths above the structure but how do you know what way to cast once you see some fish on the screen?
Lets say I am in my pontoon and I am about 100 yards from shore and it shows a depth of 25ft and I am moving horizontal to the shore line then the depth drops to 35ft and it shows a drop off on the finder screen with a group of fish on the drop off ledge at about 28ft. Where is that drop off is it directly under me or is it to the right or left of me? Would I need to just drop my line straight down to get thoes fish or would I need to cast somewhere to the dropoff?
