I seem to be having problems getting the shift linkage adjusted properly on my truck. When the truck is in park, I cant reach 1st gear. If i adjust the linkage to where i can reach 1st gear, then I cant get it to go into park. Or it goes into park but doesn't feel like it goes all the way in. Its hard to describe. Whats the deal? The transmission was fine when I came out of the other truck so its not a transmission problem I dont think.
I should also mention that when the shifter is in drive, it shows on the shift indicator that its in neutral. I had to add all the A/T stuff to this truck including the shift indicator (see below) so It could be a mis-adjustment on my part on that.
But I'm still a bit confused as to why I cant get the shifter right. Is there a special procedure that I'm missing?
This truck had a 3 speed manual trans with column shifter on it originally along with a 6 cylinder. Before I bought it someone had removed the 6 cylinder and installed a 350 but left the transmission the same. I removed the 350 engine and the m/t column/pedals and put in a 454 with a TH400 auto trans, auto trans column and auto trans brake pedal/bracket. I had to add the shift indicator as well. I also swapped in a 14 bolt full floating rear end with 4.10s which are tons better than the 3.07s it had. Its getting disc brakes soon too
The only indication left that this truck ever had a manual transmission is the hole in the floor for the clutch pedal rod.
One more thing that might be important to know (but I doubt it) is that the little piece on the side of the transmission that the shift linkage connects to and is held on by a nut, is actually from a 700r4. I lost the original one on it. It looks the same as the TH400 one and went on without a problem so I dont think thats an issue.
The transmission is from a 78, the steering column and linkage is from a 73. That shouldn't matter, but just in case it does, theres all the information.
Please help. Maybe I am just not doing it right? I dont know. I can drive it the way it is its no problem. But it drives me crazy knowing it isn't right.
