How do you play something on a midi keyboard/synth and keep it repeating while...

...playing something over it? Say if I want to play a bass part and play another part over it at the same time. Is there any hardware i can plug into my synth to do this and how much would it cost. I'm only 13 so it cant be to complicated to use. I am also using a microkorg xl.
