ive brought to old pieces of furniture and i want to paint them cream they are varnished and a bit tatty do i just rub them down undercoat and paint or is there more to it
they are a welsh dresser and a side board
thank you

depends on the look you are after...
if you want it to retain that "old look", then sand down using a 120 grit sandpaper to remove any flakes of paint and create a rough surface on the varnish for new paint to adhere to.
if you are looking to change the color completely, the use chemical stripper to strip the varnish and paint right down to bare wood. It isn't that difficult, just time consuming, but will yield the results of a new looking piece.
Neither one is better than the other it just depends on the look you are after.
Good luck!

The answer lies in the preparation - lots of elbow grease sanding them down will give a very respectable finish, but, yes - rub them down undercoat and paint!

(Also - stripper is bloody hard work, but will probably improve the finish)
