How do you paint a table with caning?

Hi, I have a set of side tables from the 1930's that have caning on all sides. The paint is old and flaking in some areas. I was looking to re-paint the tables and I'm wondering how to treat the caning? I'm worried that if I sand first the caning will be destroyed but if I don't sand the paint might get to thick and look terrible. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

You are right to be concerned. One product I might test with is soy-stripper. It doesn't have all those harsh chemicals usually found in paint strippers. http://www.realmilkpaint.com/soygel.html
