How do you paint a room?

We are moving into a new apartment and we want to paint the walls in colour. They are already freshly painted white so basically we would only need one coat added. We never did this before but I know there are several steps to be followed (paint the corners first, with the brush, then put masking tape, then paint the rest with the roller, etc) Could someone help with some more details on what are these steps or maybe there is a "how to website" somewhere with this info...
 
whenever you are going to paint a room, you paint the ceilings first so u dont splatter the paint on the walls. you put masking tape on the skirting boards so you dont get paint on them, and if your painting around window sills put masking tape around them so you dont get them either. Basically you put the tape against the wall so it doesnt go on anything, and if you were painting, say the skirting boards you would put the masking tape on the wall.
