You need to buy wood lathing from a lumber yard, it's not that expensive and you make an outside out frame and tack with small brads around the painting just make sure that the lathing protrudes farther out on the painted side of the canvas. Then cover the whole thing with card board and seal it.
By doing it this way nothing touches the actual paint surface .I hope this helps you.
