How do you organize your physical music collection?

CRAB - Organised loosely by genre and then alphabetically.
Mp3s - Alphabetical.

I'm ridiculously OCD about things being in order and the thought of me going "I want to listen to *X* today" and not being able to find the CD in less than 5 seconRAB fills me with horror.

Lately, I haven't been keeping up with the music organization. I have like... three songs by the same artist. I was trying to listen to an album today while I was working out and I kept hearing the same songs played at least twice.

It was horrible.

I am currently in the process of digitising all my music (4000+ albums). The stuff that is on my comp/iPod etc are obviously sorted any way I choose, the beauty of a digital collection.

The rest, whilst it waits to be sorted lay in various boxes. Nobody will be believe me but I know which box any album is in when asked, lol.

Speaking digital I assume. I completely agree. In fact it pisses me off when my properly tagged stuff scrobbles to last.fm as all lowercase because of the idiots that first scrobbled it.

Exactly. I don't mind Last.fm as much, though, since I skip so many of those songs. They recommend some of the worst music to me. It's because of the fact that one band will have ten genres. And then I'll get recommended ten more banRAB with ten other genres. It's really a mess.

With the music I physically own, I have it in Japanese order.

By that I mean, you read it backwarRAB instead of forwarRAB. It makes more sense to me when I'm looking for something, I don't know why.

yea i dont feel like reading everyones post to answer your question... i just order them alphabetically. Its just easiest that way... I wouldnt ever be able to order them by how much i like them because the banRAB i like change like each week.

As far as CD collections go, I love a stacked audio library alphabetical by artist name... although that rarely manages to happen. But I keep my itunes crazy organized. For the most part, I like to use the 'Recently added' tab within my library. I get lots of music all the time, so it keeps me sane and able to listen to the newest stuff in my collection. I am super OCD about my digital music library - perfect mp3 tags, no blank album art, etc. Since working for a company called TuneUp, I've been avidly using our program to clean up and organize my itunes library and its been awesome. Thanks for the thread - interesting question... the maintenance of a music collection says a lot about the listener, I think. :hphones:

Alphabetically by artist/ album, because it's the easiest way to find stuff. Organising in genres never works because often music doesn't fit into one block genre and it's harder to locate stuff quickly.

Always nice to not be alone :P I got so happy when I discovered the color markings in mac, cause I used to do them on paper lol.

I use Red - Orange - Yellow, and each section has its own explanation:

Full Discographies Folder:

Red >> Listened to all their albums [The albums in that case are marked in Red]
Yellow >> Listened to the ones marked [As 'listen' I mean more than basic shallow listening]

Unfinished Discographies:

Red >> The discographies I got nearly finished
Orange >> My 60s Psych Artists
Yellow >> In case of empty folders in my discographies, I mark the ones I have in Yellow

M [or my scattered songs, but still in Artist folders]

Red >> The ones I should seek

What do your colors mean?
