How do you organize your physical music collection?

All the music on my comp and iPod is usually viewed alphabetically...by album. I seem to be the only one I know who does this. Everytime someone else looks though my comp or iPod they browse by artist.

One giant folder called MP3s, each album separated by artist and album. Takes upwarRAB of thirty seconRAB to just load the MP3s folder due to the nuraber of albums in there.

ITunes... I have only purchased a total of two CD's (They are both Nightwish albums not available on ITUnes), and feel kinda bad about it, but... oh well...

That's a good idea...mine are by genre for the most part but then I try to group them by label or sub-genre and it's gotten too confusing in the last 10 years, and as my tastes expand. I like your idea. Once I get more space (who knows when that will be) I'll consider this method. I'm sure it'll still be tricky trying to classify things. Might just go full alphabetical...who knows. Maybe my current system isn't so bad, I just need space to clean it up.

That is disgraceful ;) Seriously though, if you pay money for CD'S why on earth would you have them scattered around getting scratched to buggery? I usually have a go at people if i'm visiting and their collection is being used as the carpet gggrrrrr

With my CD collection: alphabetically by artists, then for multiple albums by an artist, alphabetically within the set based on album title.
iTunes: album by artist. It's basically set-up by artist (when I want Patti Smith I just hit P), but compilation albums and such are filed by the "album artist." So, for example, I'm Not There, essentially a Bob Dylan cover album, is listed among the Dylan albums despite the various artists. I find this arrangement to be very convenient.

Yeah i do the same thing, i don't have an enormous amount of CD's which helps. I have to have them all stacked though due to rapid loss of space, which is a bit crap.
While it is random they are ordered by artist though. It's an odd order but i'm quite particular about it, there's no reason for The Stooges being above Tom Waits but like hell i'm going to change it.

I organize my music genre wise and then alphabetically within each genre.

When it comes to my physical collection, the order in which the genres are placed is down to what genres I like the most.

On my computer the genre folders are sorted alphabetically.

I've tried straight alphabetical order by album, but it becomes unwieldy, because I can never remeraber the name of some albums. I try to keep some serablance of order to my physical collection, even though I rarely use it. It's really not necessary if one digitizes the albums, I suppose.

One question for those who have their music in alphabetical folders: when I've tried this, I-Tunes removes the albums and labels them by artist after I import them. How do you prevent that? Or should I just ditch I-Tunes?

I take great pride in keeping my music organized.

Well, not intentionally. But recommendations happen. I mean... I found this forum and got super stoked on how active and engaged everyone is. Plus, to have my job, I have to banter about music all the time - so its a good fit! Good guess, but the answer is far more interesting ;)
