How do you mod the Sims 3, Im scared?!?

Like I really don't know how! I have been looking through and I really want clothes and car mods. They look really cool but its just I don't know how... Also will it kill my computer? Cause one time I downloaded an emulater and the computer never worked again!!! PLZ HELP!!!!!!!!!!
