Higher ISO setting- experiment starting highest (800 or 1600)
Use a tripod to prevent any blurring from camera shake

I am trying to get great shots taken in a dark building, say something like a fashion show, where it's dark everywhere except the runway. I have an basic camera a sony dsc w30 and I was wondering if anyone could help me with tips on how to make the shots look better.

increase your ISO to 400 or 600

if your little camera allows go into manual mode and make your aperture a smaller number like f/2.8

or try shoot when you see the pros flashes go off :p

If the subject is in motion the answer is to increase ISO but if you are shooting a still subject, get a tripod and decrease shutter speed and leave the ISO low. This will decrease the "noise" you get with high ISO shots.

Use 800 speed film or a higher number. The downside is you will need to be more steady with the camera than usual.

How the pictures will probably turn out (this taken with 800 film):
