How Do You Know???

I have a sister who is in her 40's and she has mentioned this chest type pain on and off on her left side. Not real strong at all. She says it could be heartburn, anxiety or even her neck and back out of whack (which she has chronic problems with that!) so my question is, how do you know if its something serious going on with the heart? If it's a heart condition, is there something more to look for?

Thanks!

I have GERD, IBS, hiatal hernia etc and when I asked my doctor the same question, he told me that heart attack pain doesn't usually go away. If it the heart he stated that you would become breathless and sweaty and just feel lousy. I am always having left sided chest pain and I visited my cardiologist and explained the symptoms and had a stress test done. I know the test doesn't cover every aspect of the heart but it can give a good idea about your heart and how it's functioning. By the I am 55 and still wonder if it is my heart when I have my chest pain. Go for a good physical with blood work and everything.
Good luck

Thanks for the reply. Ok, my sister (like me) has asthma so how can you tell if its asthma or heart problems? If its heart related, do you stay breathless? In other words, would a rescue inhaler not give any relief if it is heart related? As far as sweaty, does one stay sweaty all the time or is it off and on? She had bloodwork done about 6 months ago or so, what in the bloodwork would be a red flag for heart problems? How long do the chest pains last if it is heart related? Thanks again for your help!

You cannot tell a lot of the time. A woman I know had a 'bad back' on and off for a couple of years - pain on the left side of her back and neck. She felt ill one day and had a few tests and they found that she had been having 'silent' heart attacks for all that time. She has 23% heart capacity now and had to leave work. Get it checked out. WoW! How old is your friend? Just curious. She doesn't have health insurance. That's why I am trying to get maybe some answers here. Thanks!
