How do you know when someone is a secret smoker?

i hate when people smoke and i mostly hate it when people lie about smoking. What are the tale tell signs that person smokes? when me and my boyfriend were together, he had a lighter in his pocket. i mean it couldve just been there,but alot of his family members smoke too. when i get close to him i can smell it faintly on his breath. When i ask him about it, he gets upset, because he thinks that i dont trust or believe him. Also, if your not smoking anymore, can you still have faint smells of smoke on your breath? Does he really smoke?

Smokers have a strong smell of smoke in their hair if they've smoked recently, even one cigarette can linger for a few days. Heavy smokers can get brown tints on their fingernails and teeth.
