How do you know if a fish is a male or female?

I was just thinking about that, and I am curious...
I am talking about little fish that you keep as pets...

Every species is somewhat different. There some usual things like the male will have longer more pointed fins, The males of most species are more colorful when adults. Adult females will usually exhibit a more rounded midsection. In live bearing species the male will have a gonopodium which is a modified fin to shoot sperm at the female. Bear in mind these indications are not always true.

if its a betta, the male's tail will be longer than the female's. male bettas also tend to be more colorful. and most females, if they are egg layers, have larger stomachs...
