How do you kill the fish you caught?

My husband went fishing this morning and came home and put the fish he caught in a plastic bag in the bathroom. I asked him why and he said he was waiting for them to "calm down". I went and checked on them and they had been there for awhile because they were all dead. What the proper way to kill the fish you catch?
