How do you keep your pet goldfish alive in a fish bowl?

For valentines day i thought it would be a cute idea to get my boyfriend a pet goldfish since hes said before he was interested in having fish. but since i dont have all that much money, im interested in presenting the goldfish in a bowl. what does it take to keep a goldfish alive in a bowl? or would it be easier to keep a betta?

No fish may live in a bowl. All fish require filtration and in most cases they also require heaters.
 
neither fish will live a very long or peaceful life in a bowl. But if you have to choose I would say the betta. Goldfish do not have stomachs and therefore produce massive amounts of waste. I have my goldfish in a 20 gallon and he still manages to mess it up. Try saving a couple extra dollars though and picking up a 3-5 gallon for the betta. It will be much happier. Besides, who wants a dead fish as a v-day present? Good luck!
