How do you keep a dog out of the garden/from licking glass doors?

We have a puppy, who is just over a year old now. He keeps digging up our garden, and the lawn- we tried some advice that a friend gave us, and put dog poop in the holes he'd dug, and filled them up again, but he just digs them back up somewhere else. He also keeps licking our sliding glass door, and putting his paws on it which makes it look really, really mucky. Is there anything we can put on the door so he won't want to lick it- something that he'd hate the taste of? Thanks in advance!
@ Jenny Manyteeth- thanks for pointing out my mistake- we've had him since he was little, so I still call him my puppy.
Thanks for the advice, for those who gave it. Jay- I didn't realise that they were attracted to the smell of it, so we'll stop doing that! He's a hunting dog, and my stepfather wants to train him himself, rather than take him to obedience classes. I've tried to convince him that it would be a good idea, but he's his dog, not mine, so when I have a spare moment I try to train him (he's a bit stubborn though, so it takes more time than it did with our previous dog...).

We can't let him in the house when he wants to come in for several reasons- one, he wants to come in the house as soon as he knows someone is inside, which is usually straight after they come home from work (and are therefore wearing work clothes and don't want them to get slobbered on/covered in dog fur (yes, I KNOW he needs training!)). I work most days. My sister works most days. Both of my parents work most days. I love playing with him, and all of us do when we can, but we don't have the time or energy to AL
