How do you incorporate/write in songs and/or music into a story like a novel

or a short story? I'm writing a story like a novel and songs and music play an important part. Usually with songs, I just write a portion of the lyrics in quotes to show the song is sort of "playing in the background" but I don't know how to incorporate instrumental pieces that have no lyrics.

Do I write something like this: "An beautiful instrumental melody began to play within the young man's head as he saw the one he secretly loved"? Or is there someway to make it more creative like what if the song is not in the character's head but in the background or ambient?

Maybe you could have your main character make his own "soundtrack" and you could explain the songs from that whenever you have one, because it sounds like there is a lot of musical parts in your book.

That's just one idea and not necessarily the best, but still, I hope that helped!
