How do you guys keep your mind off of things?

I can't stop thinking, and it's not like it's a progressing thought process.

I work about 26-32 hours a week, I have band practice whenever we can, I hang out with my friends as much as possible, and I'm starting to jog for a little bit. I'm just having trouble keeping my mind off of things I shouldn't be thinking about.

I'm about to start going to a psychiatrist, because that's the only thing I can think of doing myself. Any advice? I know this is like, the best place in the world to complain...

well for some it's the jogging that helps, for some it's boxing. for some it's meditation. Some just need an ear, even though I'm not a "real" psychiatrist I always listen, if there are problems that are to be told. I'm here if you need to talk :happysad: maybe it's that you cannot let go. that you have this responsible sence, that you can't let go, because if, everything is going to be bad? :happysad:

Depends on what kinds of things you're thinking about.

Some things will just go away on their own. Other thoughts may become impulses and you may need help with those. Frankly, I'm a fan of therapy and it's takes a big person to admit they might need help.

The world is hard to deal with and sometimes we just can't do it alone. Asking for help is a HUGE step and something that can do wonders for you.

I agree with Uber. Though therapy, counseling, whatever isn't the most pleasent thing in the world... I know from experience that it really does help. Especially if you really want the help.

As for what I do personally to keep my mind off things, I write. Anything. Even if it's short, nonsensical stories. I listen to music. I photograph things. I doodle. I play videogames. I surround myself with people who make me giggle like an idiot. Or, I just make myself busy with things that require my full attention.

Anyway, if what you need is a listening ear, you know I'm here... and you know how to get ahold of me.

Yep That's what I do when I can't stop thinking about DG ;)

I agree with everyone else, you are doing a good thing for yourself. Going to a psychiatrist can really help. It's good to get things off your chest even if it doesn't seem significant. Sometimes those little things can get you down. I hope it works out well for you.

Jogging is also a great idea. You can blow off steam and get healthy at the same time! Listen to music too that helps encourage you to keep moving :)

Well...usually I masturbate but that's been said.

So, whenever I'm not masturbating to stop thinking about shit, I skateboard. It helps. Just find a hobby that you really like and do it. It'll help.

What is it that you are thinking about? If the things you shouldn't be thinking about are issues in your life, then resolve those issues or otherwise come to terms with them. And sometimes the best way to come to terms with things beyond your power is therapy. But if its an actual problem in your life, you have to accept it, or change it.

If you were a chick Id do you.

Anyway, like awaken said Ill either play a video game Im good at (cuz if you suck its just more to think about) or listen to music. I play guitar too, and that really helps. Im going through the same thing right now, but not as heavily as you. I find it best to just relax, listen to some jack johnson and sleep with the fan on low. Really really helps

Best of luck to ya shane.

Exactaly what are these things you shouldnt be thinking about?

Ive found that for me, not thinking about them leads to doing things ive decided not to think about. I'll admit a few times this has led to some less than good situations and some even worse self decisions and even a few attempts to end it. I found that sometimes thinking about it helped me to not do stupid shit because i could sit and think about the what if's and then use the bad outcomes to NOT do that shit.

Ive seen various shrinks and all and have found that about 50% of them dont give a shit, they just want to hand you pills and not listen to your problems. Its like "Oh you feel depressed, here take these, Next patient please". However dont let that discourage you. Ive also found GOOD shrinks who actualy want to listen to your problems and discuss answers or possible solutions rather than just dole out the pills and think thats all they gotta do.

Play Contra.

Jesus shat a Christ, when you're playing that game you can't think of anything else. Gotta concentrate on the bullets, guys walking around you, things under you, things above you ya can't see, where your first lands when you swing at your monitor, etc etc... Better than masterbation.

I don't recomend a psychiatrist, as they are usually pill pushers. A psychologist would be the way to go. Or just a therapist. Someone to talk to, provide you with mental exercises to overcome some things. They're great.

Good luck
