How do you get an USB MIDI Keyboard to work within Ableton?

I have an yamaha PSR-170 keyboard (kinda old) and Ableton Live 8.1.1. I went out and bought an MIDI to MIDI to USB connection cords and plugged it into my ACER Aspire Z3101-U4062 touch screen PC (2.8 GHZ Dual Core, 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD). When I plugged in the USB it installed correctly... and when I opened up Ableton it recognized the USB but when i hit sync on and remote on... ect (played around with alot of off and on switches).. Nothing seems to get the keyboard noise into the Ableton program. Yes the keyboard is on and at a very low level. If someone could point me to step by step instructions I would greatfully appreciative. I know it can work within the program bc the MIDI to USB cord when I am messing with settings flashes occasionally the OFF led (when messing with settings not key strokes). So I know it can send sound... and Ableton recognizes the drivers but again no sound from my keyboard to Ableton. I tried FL Studio 10 but it was an epic fail as the MIDI cord never flashed once. So please anyone help me anyone... step by step if you can. i really need it to work so i can work with my keyboard in a program.
