How do you get a betta fish to?

At my petco, they sell the betta's in cup-like things. I don't see how you can let that float of the surface of the tank when you get them so they get used to the water temperature? It seems like, if you let the cup go, it would sink to the bottom of the tank. I am JUST WONDERING.

put the whole cup in the tank and then when he is used to the water, open the cup up.

Generally, you can just pour it in. You can also fill a bag with the cup's contents and sit it there in the water.

Several previous answers stating that Bettas are pretty hardy and do not need water temperature equalising because they can survive it.
They are probably right but I take the view that surviving an experience is not the same as enjoying it or it being good for them. They would be much better off with the temperatures equalised and since it is so easy to do I can't see the point of running the risk by not doing it.
