How do you find a reputable auto mechanic?

I've moved recently, I need some work done on my truck and I don't want the local 'shade tree' mechanic working on it. Not that they're bad; I've known some before that were mechanical Einsteins, but I'd known them for decades.

Now I'm in a totally new area and don't know where to turn.
I'm in south Austin, TX; if anybody knows of a place personally.
 
If you have time, the best way is to go to a dealership sit in the waiting room and ask some of the patrons, not only will they tell you who is good but also if the dealership does a good job for them. You can also ask if they have ever had any issues there before. Another way is to ask some local mechanic who he talks to if he gets stuck with a repair. This will put you on the right track. You could also do a local search on yahoo and read some reviews on different repair shops.
 
No such animal exists...

(Deepy cynical about auto mechanics...they got us all by the Kachungas...)
 
Start by talking to people at work, any of them may be able to either recommend a good mechanic, or warn you away from a bad one.

You may have to try a few before you get one that you like. Unfortunately, there are a lot of "mechanics" out there who are either dishonest, incompetent or both, and make us all look bad.
