How do you figure out which fishing areas are polluted / which are safe for consumption?

I live in Florida and am wondering if theres any way to tell. I know some parts of the US are so polluted you shouldn't eat the fish but its sort of hush hush not talked about.
 
the department of health services in my state issues "consumption bans" and "advisories" applicable to specific bodies of water, which are posted on fish and game authority's website -- I bet yours does too.

for example:
"
...
Lake Worth in Tarrant County
Chemicals of Concern: Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)

Persons should not consume any species of fish from these waters.
..."
